My Project

Part of my reading curriculum focuses on learning about different communities and how they work together to make their lives better. Understandably, it is difficult for my first graders to imagine beyond their own experiences how other communities may be different from their own. I want to use some really amazing literature to help expand my kids' understanding.

I am asking for quality, award-winning picture books to help give my students a window into the experiences of others.

The books I am asking for range from "Maybe Something Beautiful" (Campoy, Howell) about a neighborhood that creates a beautiful mural to "They're Heroes Too" (Brisson) about the unsung heroes of every community to "The Wolf Suit" (Sharp) about finding where you belong. These engaging stories will help expand my students' awareness of other communities and get them to make connections to their own community.
