My Project

My 65 year old classroom is in need of a facelift. With your help, it will be transformed from a noisy, yellow room into a calm learning space for all my students. According to Edutopia, “There are many things about the ... environment that can impact student learning, with some researchers suggesting that 10 to 15 percent of variance in academic outcomes is influenced by the environment.”

Reading and writing—skills so central to the learning process—are best supported by well-lit, calming environments.

I will use the florescent light filters, an air purifier and a white noise machine to improve my students' learning environment. It is hoped that a calm and student friendly classroom will improve student engagement and success in the social studies. This is especially true for many of my students who are neurodivergent and/or are sensitive to sounds and bright lights.
